The look on her face showed me that what I told her was definitely not the answer she was looking for. Far from it.
I was having a conversation with a client about her progress over the last couple months – or lack thereof in her opinion – and she was looking for answers. A fair response after 2 months of hard work in the gym and seeing the scale go in the opposite direction she wanted it to.
She went on to tell me how she had been working hard during the workouts and she couldn’t understand why she would be actually gaining weight after adding exercise into her life 2-4 days per week.
The first thing I asked her – the first thing I ask everyone – was, “Where is your food journal?”
She looked at me coyly before sidestepping that question with a question of her own: “Shouldn’t that added exercise and calorie burning be enough to see a difference even if her diet was exactly the same?”
The answer to that very question was what led to the look on her face I mentioned at the beginning.
You see, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again and I’m sure I’ll repeat until I hang up my Lululemons and retire to a beach somewhere….
YOU CANNOT OUT TRAIN A BAD DIET
People think that because I own a gym and train people all day that I’ll give them a different answer, but I don’t care how hard your exercising, you will NEVER out train your bad diet. Diet will always be your number 1 priority when it comes to fat loss. Exercise is a distant second.
That’s not to say that exercise isn’t important (the RIGHT exercise, anyways), it definitely is, but in terms of importance for actual fat loss, diet wins every time.
A better way to look at diet and exercise is that DIET is how you get the weight off, and EXERCISE is how you keep it off. [CLICK TO TWEET]
It’s way too easy to overeat on the wrong foods and completely destroy the caloric deficit you created for yourself during your workouts. Then add on top of that the fact that you’ll naturally be hungrier when you start a workout program and it’s game over.
If you don’t have your diet wrapped up you’ll be eating more calories of the wrong foods than you even realize without thinking twice. Not to mention the fact that most people will rationalize with themselves, thinking that because they had a hard workout that day then they DESERVE that extra serving at dinner or that bowl of ice cream for dessert.
Actually, no…you don’t. Put it down.
Then there’s also the physiological response you have to the foods you eat. After all, we don’t live in a vacuum and not all calories are created equal. You have a physiological response to foods you eat combined with a hormonal response which leads to more physiological response which can either be a good thing or a bad thing for your waistline. If you’re having this conversation with me, then you’re probably seeing the “bad side” of the response and we need to clean up your diet…quickly.
But it’s not all bad, I have good news for you…
Cleaning up your diet and eating for fat loss is simple….once you accept how hard it is.
What I mean by that is the strategies in the beginning are very simple (i.e. eat more protein, eat more vegetables, eat more good fats, eat less refined carbs etc.), but the hard part is actually DOING IT CONSISTENTLY.
So I challenge you today to look at your diet and if you’re not getting the fat loss results you want, I promise you it’s probably something related to your diet…so clean it up.
After the dust settled from my heated conversation with my client we decided she would log her food for the next week and bring it in to me so we could go through it and see what might be going on.
Along with that I told her to focus on limiting the refined carbs in her diet like bread and instead have starchy carbs like sweet potatoes, white potatoes or white rice and to keep those foods to AFTER WORKOUTS ONLY.
Maybe that advice will work well for you too?
If you’re one of the thousands (maybe millions) of people that are frustrated by GAINING weight on their weight loss program – I MIGHT be able to help you just like I helped my client in the above.
